The Garden City Baseball team entered WWAC play on Monday on a roll, winning its first 7 contests of the season backed by strong pitching and defense, giving up a total of only 9 runs through 7 ballgames. On Monday, the Cougars continued their winning ways, defeating the Clarenceville Trojans 14-0 in a five-innings.
Against Clarenceville, GC was led on the mound by junior Gavin Fein, who went the distance, throwing 5 innings, allowing only 1 hit, striking out 10, and walking 2. At the plate, senior Kevin Widmer went 2-3 with 3 RBI. Senior leadoff hitter Jacob Grant also had a nice day, going 2-3 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Junior Jacob Monteith also added 2 RBI for the Cougars.
Through 8 games, the Cougars have been led at the plate by Widmer, with a .455 batting average, 1 home run, and 6 RBI. Grant isn’t far behind, hitting .368 with 13 runs scored and 10 RBI.
On the mound, GC has had spectacular pitching performances across the board, with a team ERA of 0.81. Grant is 3-0 overall, followed by Fein at 2-0 overall. Sophomore Anthony Olsen also added a complete game outing against Allen Park-Cabrini with zero earned runs. Sophomore James Haranczak and Junior Nathan Robinson have turned in strong performances for the Cougars as well, each with 1 win to help propel the Cougars to their 8-0 (1-0) start to the season.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, April 10th, at home against Livonia Clarenceville, followed by a Saturday, April 13th doubleheader at Livonia Franklin.
