In the nightcap of Monday’s doubleheader, Garden City defeated Redford Union 18-0 to improve to 24-4 overall.
GC completes the sweep of the Western Wayne Athletic Conference schedule with the win, improving to 14-0 in league play. This is Garden City’s first WWAC Championship since 2016. The Cougars outscored opponents 187-15 in WWAC play this season. The Cougars finished undefeated in league play for the first time since 2010.
The 24th win for Garden City sets a school team record for wins in a season. The record was previously held by the 2000 team, which went 23-5.
In the nightcap, the Garden City offense had 15 hits. Junior Jordon Szabo went 3-3 with a double and 5 RBI to lead the way for the Cougars. Freshmen Nate Widmer and Braden Earle also had strong games for GC. Widmer went 3-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, and Earle went 3-4 with 3 RBI. Junior Nathan Robinson also drove in 3 runs on his 2-3 day at the plate. Ian Will, Collin Hilobuk, and Tyler Malek drove in runs for Garden City as well.
On the mound, Earle and Robinson combined for the shutout. Earle stuck out 5 Panther hitters in 2 innings of work, and Robinson struck out 2 in his one inning of work to close out the ballgame.
The Cougar baseball team returns to action on Thursday, May 23rd at home against Milan HS for a doubleheader to finish out the regular season. Thursday night is Senior Night for the Garden City baseball team. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:30pm.
